Arizona Department of Public Safety introduces its 1st crisis response canine

The Arizona Department of Public Safety recently welcomed its first-ever crisis response canine. Her name is Daisy.

The four-month-old Australian labradoodle was donated to DPS by Blue Line Doodles of Arizona, Pups and Warriors Side by Side and Post Incident Stress & Trauma in Law Enforcement – Public Safety.

Officials emphasized how vital crisis canines are for public safety, explaining that they can help reduce the body’s stress response which allows victims, survivors, family members and witnesses to process traumatic events better.

Additionally, the dogs support first responders by providing them with a sense of stability and connection after emergencies.

Daisy is assigned to Detective Carpenter and Detective Villela, who are part of DPS’ Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT). She is still at the beginning of her crisis response training and works with her handlers to build the skills she needs.

Despite that, Daisy has already responded to her second call for service, which was also her first operational deployment.

On Friday, July 24, she assisted CNT with serving a high-risk search warrant.

During the operation, an uninvolved man was evaluated by paramedics due to experiencing significant emotional stress. Daisy crawled into his lap and provided him with comfort while he was being assessed.

DPS emphasized that the steadiness and support demonstrated by Daisy is exactly why crisis response canines are so important in stressful situations.
