SR 51, Loop 202 Santan Freeway closures return with new stretches shut down this weekend

Traffic detours are in place as pavement and widening projects shut freeway lanes from Friday night through Monday morning across the Phoenix area.

Construction projects will shut down lanes on State Route 51 and Loop 202 Santan Freeway, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

The traffic authority broke down the different closures in its weekend travel advisory.

SR 51 northbound closes for pavement work through Monday

As it has for several past weekends, northbound SR 51 shuts down between Bethany Home Road and Northern Avenue from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for a pavement improvement project.

Northbound SR 51 on-ramps at Thomas Road, Indian School Road and Colter Street will be closed while crews are working.

ADOT is pointing traffic to northbound Interstate 17 as an alternative route to reach north Phoenix. Drivers can also use northbound 16th Street to eastbound Northern Avenue.

Loop 202 Santan Freeway widening project bring closures to East Valley

Crews are working their way down eastbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway lanes for an ongoing widening project. That work closes the freeway between Cooper Road and Val Vista Drive from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

Eastbound Loop 202 on-ramps at Alma School Road, Arizona Avenue and McQueen Road will also be closed.

Alternative routes include Pecos Road and Germann Road. Traffic authorities also point to eastbound US 60 Superstition Freeway as an available alternative work around.
