Man hospitalized for self-inflicted gunshot wound near Tempe freeway, police say

A man who shot himself was hospitalized Wednesday night after an incident near the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway, authorities said.

A man who shot himself was hospitalized Wednesday night after an incident near the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway, authorities said.

The Tempe Police Department said a gunshot was heard from inside the man’s car after they had stopped him while investigating a domestic violence call. Tempe PD said no officers fired their weapons.

A large police presence was seen blocking the westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway on-ramp from Scottsdale Road. Police had advised the public to avoid the area and seek a different route.
