Popular Lipan Point viewing area at Grand Canyon closing for 6-month rehabilitation project

Lipan Point, one of Grand Canyon National Park’s most popular viewing areas, is closing for six months for critical maintenance work.

The scenic overlook, which is located along Desert View Drive about 2 miles west of the park’s east entrance station, will be shut down from June 22 to Dec. 23 to allow for asphalt removal, trail reconstruction and trail resurfacing. Lipan Point Road will also be closed.

The goal of the rehabilitation project is to improve visitor access and preserve the site for future use, according to park officials.

Grand Canyon visitors will still be able to enjoy the view at multiple scenic overlooks along Desert View Drive.

Additionally, Tanner Trail will remain open during the rehabilitation project. However, parking will not be available along Desert View Drive near Lipan Point Road.

Tanner Trail visitors will have to park at “No Name Point,” about 1,000 feet west of Lipan Point Road, and walk to the trailhead.
