Scottsdale police release footage of officer-involved shooting at station lobby

The Scottsdale Police Department released surveillance and body-camera footage Sunday of an officer-involved shooting at a police station lobby last month.

The incident occurred around 9:40 a.m. on April 30 in the front lobby at the McKellips District station near Miller and McKellips roads.

In a Critical Incident Briefing video, lobby camera footage showed 23-year-old Eva Josefina Garcia entering the lobby with a backpack.

At around 9:45 a.m., Garcia pulled out a handgun from her backpack and then walked toward the information police aide and pointed a gun at her. The police aide, who was behind protective glass, then retreated and used her radio to call for help.

Garcia then walked over to the station’s vehicle impound window and pointed the gun at a man there. The man was cornered and could not escape.

Officers, who were inside the station, responded to the call from the police aide. One of the officers, a sergeant whose name has not been revealed, was the “first to get into a small hallway between a set of doors separating the lobby from the rest of the building,” Scottsdale Police Public Information Officer Aaron Bolin said in the video.

The sergeant then made commands for Garcia to drop the gun, according to Bolin. Body camera footage showed that as the sergeant opened the door to the lobby, he made additional commands to Garcia to drop the weapon. Garcia refused and pointed the weapon at the sergeant. This is when the sergeant fired his weapon, which struck Garcia.

Garcia was taken to a hospital and was in productive custody for 12 days until being released. She was subsequently booked into jail on several felony charges.

No officers or other individuals at the station were injured in the incident.
