Scottsdale officer shoots woman who allegedly wielded gun inside police station

PHOENIX — A Scottsdale officer shot and wounded a woman who pulled out a gun in a police station lobby Thursday morning, authorities said.

Investigators are still working to determine what the woman was doing at the District 1 Station near Miller and McKellips roads in the first place, the Scottsdale Police Department said.

She entered the customer service lobby and allegedly pointed a gun at an unarmed police employee around 9:45 a.m. The woman then moved to another customer service window and allegedly pointed the gun at a citizen who was there on police business.

Multiple officers responded to the lobby and told the woman to drop the gun.

“She did not drop the gun. (She) in fact pointed it at our officers,” Officer Aaron Bolin said during a news conference. “And one of our Scottsdale officers then fired his weapon and basically neutralized the threat.”

The officer fired at least once and the suspect was struck at least once, Bolin said.

The woman fell to the ground and dropped her weapon, which was secured by other officers.

She was taken to a hospital, where she remains in protective custody.

No officers were hurt. The police station lobby will remain closed until Monday, but the food pantry that shares the parking lot will be open as usual, Bolin said.

The Mesa Police Department is investigating the police shooting as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team.

It was the second shooting involving Valley law enforcement in as many days. On Wednesday, a man wanted in connection with an aggravated assault on a Tolleson officer was shot and killed by police in Phoenix.
