No Arizona highway closures for Memorial Day travel as DPS adds patrols, urges caution

While Memorial Day travel won’t be impacted by state highway construction projects, Arizona Department of Transportation officials are still urging travelers to plan ahead as heavier traffic is expected to cause delays Friday through Monday.

ADOT is encouraging drivers to buckle up, avoid distractions, slow down through work zones and pack an emergency kit with water, a first-aid kit and a charged cellphone.

Safety officials also cautioned that being well-rested is just as important as vehicle preparation. Sgt. Kameron Lee with the Arizona Department of Public Safety warned against fatigued driving, comparing it to impaired driving.

“Everyone is in a hurry. But fatigued driving is very similar to impaired driving,” he said. “Our goal is just to make the travel safe for you so that you can get to your destination, enjoy your Memorial Day weekend.”

Among the common problems troopers see on the roadways are breakdowns and blowouts from poorly maintained vehicles, Lee said.

“A lot of the issues we see out on the roadways are vehicles that are broken down, tires that have blown out because they’re not properly maintained,” Lee said. “Make sure your tires are inflated … check to make sure your belts, oil, all of those things that go along with that, making sure it’s in good working order.”

While no construction or maintenance closures are scheduled, ADOT crews and the Incident Response Unit will be on call to respond to incidents, and extra DPS troopers will be on duty throughout Arizona during the holiday weekend.
