Arizona driver found guilty of meth-impaired driving with 12-year-old passenger

A man from Prescott Valley was found guilty of driving under the influence of methamphetamine with a 12-year-old passenger, authorities announced Tuesday.

A jury convicted 45-year-old Robert Casimer Luft on May 14, according to the Yavapai County Attorney’s Office.

He was found guilty of the following charges:

• • Possession or use of dangerous drugs (methamphetamine)
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Aggravated DUI with a passenger under 15
  • Child abuse

“Impaired driving is not a harmless mistake. It is a reckless act that endangers everyone on the road,” Yavapai County Attorney Dennis McGrane said in the announcement. “I have seen families shattered in an instant because someone selfishly chose alcohol or drugs over responsibility.”

Luft’s criminal charges date back to an incident on Aug. 8, 2024.

Deputies with the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office saw Luft driving erratically on Highway 69 and Agua Fria Road, near the Town of Dewey-Humboldt, prosecutors said.

The deputy stopped Luft and gave him a DUI test. Law enforcement found methamphetamine both in Luft’s pocket and in his bloodstream.

His sentencing is scheduled for June 30.
