Woman shot by officer at Scottsdale police station taken from hospital to jail

PHOENIX – The woman who was shot by an officer after she allegedly wielded a gun in a Scottsdale police station last month was released from the hospital Monday and taken to jail, authorities said.

Eva Josefina Garcia, 23, had been hospitalized in protective custody since the April 30 incident, according to the Scottsdale Police Department.

After getting medical clearance, Garcia was booked into a Maricopa County jail for attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, kidnapping and disorderly conduct.

Her bond was set at $850,000.

What led up to woman getting shot at Scottsdale police station?

The incident that ended with Garcia being shot started when she entered the customer service lobby of the District 1 Station near Miller and McKellips roads and allegedly pointed a gun at an unarmed police employee.

She then moved to another customer service window and allegedly pointed the gun at a citizen who was there on police business.

Multiple officers responded to the lobby and told the woman to drop the gun.

“She did not drop the gun. (She) in fact pointed it at our officers,” Officer Aaron Bolin said during a news conference after the shooting. “And one of our Scottsdale officers then fired his weapon and basically neutralized the threat.”

The officer fired at least once and the suspect was struck at least once, Bolin said.

The woman fell to the ground and dropped her weapon, which was secured by other officers.

No officers were hurt.

The Mesa Police Department is investigating the police shooting as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team.
