PHOENIX — The skyline near Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is preparing for a new addition as developers officially broke ground Monday on the first hotel at the SkyBridge Arizona master-planned development.

SkyPlus Hotel Corporation celebrated the start of construction on a dual-branded Wingate and Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham. Located at 6639 S. Sossaman Road, just north of Pecos Road, the project marks the first hospitality venture within the 363-acre international trade and logistics site.

The five-story, 70,586-square-foot hotel will have 129 guest rooms. It is designed to cater to a mix of short-term business travelers and extended-stay guests tied to the region’s growing aerospace and manufacturing sectors.

“Every time I stand at a SkyBridge groundbreaking, I feel at home because it brings us back to the people and the shared vision that started this journey,” Ariel Picker, president of PeakAir Developments, said in a press release. “What began a few years ago as an integrated vision is now becoming reality.”

The development is expected to be a significant job creator for the East Valley, with projections of up to 248 construction jobs and 111 operational positions once the hotel’s construction begins and is completed.

Mesa Mayor Mark Freeman joined developers at the site, noting that the rapid growth of the airport, which now sees millions of travelers annually, has created a pressing need for more local accommodations.

“There’s nothing more exciting than heavy equipment and dirt because it represents the future of what’s happening in Mesa,” Freeman said.

The hotel is the fifth building to be constructed at SkyBridge. To date, the development has seen more than $98 million in infrastructure and construction costs across more than 45 acres. All currently completed buildings on the property are fully leased.

Beyond business travelers, SkyPlus Hotel officials noted they hope to partner with the nearby Arizona Athletic Grounds to house athletes and families visiting the massive youth sports complex.

Amenities at the new property will include a fitness center, a swimming pool, EV charging stations, an airport shuttle and meeting space capable of holding 350 people. A future restaurant pad is also planned for the site.

The project is being built by Alston Construction and was designed by Reflect Architecture. It is slated to open in spring 2027.
