Phoenix hits record high for 7th consecutive day as unrelenting heat wave continues

PHOENIX — Phoenix shattered another heat record Tuesday after temperatures climbed to an all-time high, according to the National Weather Service.

The mercury at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the NWS uses to measure the city’s heat, peaked at 100 degrees.

This shattered the previous highest temperature recorded for March 24, which was set last year.

It also marked a week of triple-digit temperatures.

Over a three‑day stretch from Thursday to Saturday, temperatures soared to 105 degrees, making history as the hottest March readings ever recorded in Phoenix.

The city usually sees highs around 80 degrees at this time of year.

Before last week, the city had only hit triple digits once in March, back on March 26, 1988.

Additionally, the NWS predicts that the current run of record‑breaking heat could extend to 11 straight days.

NWS Meteorologist Alicia Ryan said a high-pressure system will keep highs at least in the upper 90s into the weekend.

“Moving forward into the week, the high pressure begins to build back up over the region, which will get our temperatures back into the triple digits,” Ryan told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Tuesday. “It’s not until the weekend that it’s looking that it might cool back down into the mid-90s.”

However, as April approaches, there may be a cooldown.

“Going into more mid-April, they still might come back down to maybe low- to mid-90s, still expecting to be floating above normal,” Ryan said. “But as far as staying in triple digits, we’re expecting to start moving away from that by the end of this month, beginning of April time frame.”
