Heat records expected to fall throughout the week in metro Phoenix

PHOENIX — While Phoenix could get a brief respite from 100-degree high temperatures, heat records are expected to fall on a daily basis throughout the week.

“We’re still looking at well‑above‑normal temperatures for the next several days,” National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Worley told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday. “Today and tomorrow will be relatively cooler, but highs will still run 15 to 20 degrees above normal.”

After five consecutive days with triple-digit temperatures, Phoenix is expected to top out at 99 degrees on Monday and Tuesday. The record highs for those days are 93 and 96, respectively. Normal daily highs for this time of year are about 80 degrees.

“As we head into the middle portion of the week, we’re looking at the return of triple‑digit temperatures,” Worley said.

Phoenix entered Monday on a five-day streak with record high temperatures. If the forecast holds, the streak could reach 11 before it ends, as Sunday is the next day when the projected high is below the daily record for the date.

Triple-digit temperatures came to metro Phoenix early this year

Last week, temperatures at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport — the city’s official recording site — reached 105 degrees for three consecutive days, from Thursday through Saturday.

Those highs set a new record for the hottest March temperature since the NWS began keeping records in Phoenix in 1896. Before last week, the city had only reached 100 degrees in March once: March 26, 1988.

An extreme heat warning that was issued last week ended Sunday evening, meaning hiking trail closures at Camelback Mountain, Piestewa Peak and South Mountain have been lifted.

However, another warning could be issued later this week.

“We may issue another one over the next few days, depending on how temperatures trend,” Worley said.
