Gilbert breaks ground on Phase 2 of Desert Sky Park, features pickleball courts

PHOENIX — The city of Gilbert announced the groundbreaking on the second phase of Desert Sky Park, which will include eight pickleball courts and two sand volleyball courts.

The next construction phase at the park, which is located at Power and Williams Field roads, is expected to take about two years, according to a press release.

A lake, ninja warrior course and four multi-use fields are current pieces of the park, which opened to the public in fall 2019.

Once phase two is complete, the park will be built out to 115 acres and offer the following to the public:

• Five multi-use fields
• A splash pad
• Two playgrounds
• Eight pickleball courts (with shade pavilion)
• Two sand volleyball courts (with shade canopy)
• A tennis court
• A basketball court
• A dog running area
• Two restroom buildings
• Three entry points
• More parking spots

Brian Cannon, Gilbert Parks and Recreation advisory board chair, said the expansion will be felt most by the growing area’s youth sports front.

“(It) will significantly expand the number of playable fields, and with that expansion comes new possibilities for youth sports that teach discipline, teamwork and resilience,” Cannon said.

Desert Sky Park is open daily from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
