Glendale police officer hospitalized after collision involving elderly driver

PHOENIX — A police officer was injured in a Monday afternoon crash involving an elderly driver in the West Valley, authorities said.

The officer was traveling westbound on Glendale Avenue when the collision near 83rd and Glendale avenues when the collision occurred, according to the Glendale Police Department.

An elderly driver turned left in front of the patrol car, causing the crash, police said.

At this time in the investigation, detectives do not believe impairment was a factor in the collision.

The officer was hospitalized after complaining of an injured shoulder and arm, while the elderly driver was also hospitalized for minor injuries, police said.

As of 2:30 p.m. Monday, Glendale police have not said if they intend to issue charges or citations against the senior driver involved in the collision.

It was the second crash involving a police officer in the Valley on Monday. The first took place around 7 a.m. on Bethany Home Road in Phoenix.

In the first metro Phoenix police officer-involved collision, a patrol Tahoe flipped during a two-vehicle crash, temporarily closing Bethany Home Road in both directions between 23rd Avenue and Interstate 17.

An officer was taken to a hospital as a precaution afterward.
