2 people dead following altercation in Phoenix

PHOENIX — Two people are dead following a shooting in Phoenix on Saturday morning, authorities said.

Police responded to a reported shooting in the area of 22nd Place and Roosevelt Street around 7:40 a.m., according to the Phoenix Police Department. 

Upon arrival, officers found 28-year-old Malik Hopkins and 37-year-old Warren Middlebrooks with gunshot wounds. They were both taken to a nearby hospital where they later died due to their injuries, police said.

After an investigation, authorities said both men were engaged in a fight when a handgun and knife were drawn. Authorities believe both men were fighting over the gun and had shot each other.

Police said both men sustained gunshot wounds while Hopkins also sustained stab wounds in the altercation.

No other people are suspected to be involved in the altercation. No other information was made available.
