Fragments of human remains found in Yavapai County desert

PHOENIX — Authorities are trying to determine how human remains found in a splintered box ended up in a remote part of the desert in Yavapai County on Monday.

According to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, the remains of a splintered box and human bones were discovered by a man grading the desert with a tractor.

Sheriff’s deputies called in search and rescue dogs and officials from the medical examiner’s office, expecting to find clues to a recent crime. However, it is estimated that the remains are between 55-85 years old.

Experts from the Prescott Sharlot Hall Museum were notified to try and uncover more information about the area that could be related to the unidentified bones.

The ruins are now being studied by a team of historians and forensic experts to try to uncover the mysterious, unexpected discovery.
