Toddler dies at hospital after being pulled from pool in Scottsdale

PHOENIX — A toddler died at a Valley hospital after being pulled out of a pool at an apartment complex in Scottsdale, authorities said.

The Scottsdale Fire Department said they received a distress call the morning of July 29 from a complex located near Scottsdale and McDowell roads.

The call said a 3-year-old child had been found unresponsive in the swimming pool.

Firefighters went to the complex, began life-saving measures and then took the child to a nearby children’s hospital, where the child died the next day.

An investigation is ongoing, but police said no foul play is suspected.

How to keep children safe around the pool, other bodies of water

To help keep children safe when they are around pools and other bodies of water this fall, Scottsdale Fire had these tips:

• Make sure children are always supervised and designate a “Water Watcher” who will always keep their eyes on the pool.
• Use barriers, such as fences with self-closing and self-latching gates.
• Teach children about water safety early. This includes enrolling children in swim lessons and helping them learn water safety skills as early in life as possible.
• Be prepared and make sure all adults around the water know how to perform CPR.
• Avoid false security and do not rely on flotation devices such as water wings or pool noodles.
• Empty containers such as kiddie pools, tubs and buckets once they are no longer being used.
