Former Tempe police officer arrested for allegedly submitting fraudulent overtime hours

PHOENIX — A former Tempe police officer was arrested Thursday for allegedly submitting fraudulent overtime hours, authorities said.

Demetrius Domonique Mitchell was arrested on felony charges of fraudulent schemes and theft, according to the Tempe Police Department.

Why was the former Tempe police officer arrested?

A Tempe Police supervisor discovered the alleged discrepancies between hours worked and hours recorded.

Body worn camera footage, activity reports, phone records, call sheets, GPS data and log-in information going back two years were then examined and reportedly showed no evidence of Mitchell working during those overtime hours.

“Our officers are held to a higher standard,” Tempe Police Chief Kenneth McCoy said in a press release. “When there is sufficient evidence that an officer has violated the law and broken public trust, we will make an arrest and hold them accountable. This is about transparency, integrity and maintaining the trust of those we serve.”

Mitchell served as a Tempe Police Officer for four years and resigned on Tuesday.
