Man drowns while helping rescue 2 children from Colorado River in Arizona

PHOENIX – A man drowned over the weekend while helping rescue two children in a southwestern Arizona river, authorities said.

The incident occurred around noon Saturday at the Colorado River in Yuma, according to the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office.

A group of people were swimming at the Horseshoe Island sandbar, near Hidden Shores Resort, when the current pulled two children away from the shallows.

Jeffrey Brady, 51, of Yuma swam out to help the children stay afloat until a vessel was able to get them out of the water.

However, Brady was seen struggling before he went underwater and did not resurface.

Search crews recovered his body around 7:20 p.m.
