West Valley police dog to retire after 5 years of service

PHOENIX — K9 Sem, a police dog in Tolleson, is set to retire at the end of April after five years of service with the Tolleson Police Department.

Sem will retire on April 30. He will spend his retirement with his handler, Officer Jack Brand and his family, according to a Tolleson news release.

“K-9 Sem has been a loyal partner and community hero,” said city officials. “We thank him for his service and wish him a relaxing retirement.”

A Belgian Malinois from the Netherlands, K9 Sem specialized in narcotics detection and patrol with the Tolleson Police Department.

Since joining in 2019, Sem has responded to 141 calls. Sem has assisted in cases involving the arrest of homicide, armed robbery and kidnapping suspects as well as helping with the seizure of fentanyl and other narcotics, according to the release.
