Phoenix can expect below-normal temperatures as cold front hits this week

PHOENIX – If you were worried the Valley would go from winter to summer without a real spring this year, you can breathe a sigh of relief.

After Phoenix broke two daily heat records last week, a cold front is expected to drop temperatures a good bit below normal in the coming days.

The forecast calls for a high in the low 80s on Monday, about normal for this time of year, followed by peak temperatures in the low 70s, or even chillier, through Friday.

“Wednesday will be the coolest day, where we might actually be struggling to see highs get out of the 60s across the Valley,” Isaac Smith of the National Weather Service in Phoenix told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday morning.

In addition, winds are expected to pick up as a cold air mass from the Pacific Ocean moves into the Valley.

“We’re going to be looking at breezy conditions lasting through the middle part of the week,” Smith said. “After Wednesday, we’ll start seeing those gusts taper off, but right now it looks like Tuesday we’ll see our strongest winds across the area.”

Meanwhile, Smith said the chances for rain this week are “very meager,” with any activity likely to remain north and east of the Phoenix area.

How long will cold front keep temperatures down?

Last week, Phoenix reached the 90s on four consecutive days and set daily heat records on Monday at 96 degrees and Tuesday at 99.

Looking ahead, the cooldown isn’t expected to last beyond this week.

“As we look into the eight- to 14-day outlook, we start seeing a trend toward above-normal temperatures entering the forecast period again,” Smith said. “So, that’s something we’ll just have to watch out for as we push into the middle part of April.”
