New Arizona license plate promotes safety for cyclists and motorists

PHOENIX — A new license plate is available for Arizona drivers that promotes safety for cyclists and motorists.

The Share the Road plate was created by the Rob Dollar Foundation and the Uphill Into the Wind benefit to spread awareness about road safety.

Dollar was hit by a car and killed while riding his bicycle in October 2017.

The organizations received more than $32,000 in donations to bring the plate, which is blue and yellow and depicts a typical road and bike path in Arizona, to fruition.

Republican Rep. T.J. Shope also assisted in the creation of the plate, which is available for purchase on the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division website.

“While our nonprofit benefits from the sale of the Share the Road license plate, this was far from a solo effort,” John Dollar, president of the Rob Dollar Foundation, said in a press release.

“We couldn’t have done this without the help of T.J. Shope, Uphill Into the Wind and the incredibly supportive cyclist community, all of which sought to save lives by raising awareness of this important issue.”

The plate costs $25, with $17 going to the two organizations.

With the addition of the plate, there are now more than 70 custom ones available for purchase.

ADOT in July announced $11.4 million in sales of specialty plates for the 2020 fiscal year, topping the 2019 record of $11.2 million.

Residents can choose from a selection of specialty license plates on Service Arizona’s website.
