Short but sweet: Big 2-day cooldown headed to Phoenix area

PHOENIX – It’s not quite sweater weather, but metro Phoenix is going to cool down to under 100 degrees for a couple days starting Wednesday, forecasters said.

Even better for early risers, low temperatures will barely reach 70 those days, the National Weather Service said Tuesday.

Wednesday’s high was expected to top out at 91 degrees with an overnight low of 70 degrees. Temperatures begin to climb again Thursday at 96 degrees with a low of 73 degrees.

By Friday, daylight hours could hit 100 degrees and Saturday was likely to get up to 104 degrees.

The respite follows a handful of daily heat records set in the Valley. Sunday’s high of 112 degrees was the third straight day besting previous marks.

The cooldown is coming from a storm system in Utah, according to the weather bureau. But it’s also bringing wind gusts that triggered red flag warnings for Tuesday. Winds could reach 30 mph.

Between June and August, Phoenix reported 50 days with a high temperature of at least 110 degrees, surpassing the record of 33 days set in 2011, and July and August were the hottest months ever in the nation’s fifth-largest city.
