Scalding temperatures trigger excessive heat warning for Phoenix

PHOENIX – Dangerously hot temperatures are expected to blanket metro Phoenix over the next few days, jump-starting another excessive heat warning, Arizona forecasters said Tuesday.

The warning will go into effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday to 8 p.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service’s Phoenix bureau said.

Daytime temperatures were likely to hit at least 110 degrees the rest of the week. Tuesday’s high was predicted to be 112 degrees. It could be blazing at 115 degrees Thursday and Friday.

The brutal heat will bleed into next week, too, when it likely will be 110 degrees or more each day, according to the weather service.

“This type of heat is a concern,” bureau meteorologist Andrew Deemer told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Tuesday.

“It’s exhausting for people.”

Temperatures have hit 110 degrees or more 24 days this year. The record is 33 days.

Sundown is helping, but it’s still not a pretty picture.

Nighttime lows have been at least 90 degrees 13 times this year, creeping toward the all-time mark of 15, reached in 2003 and 2013.

Maricopa County’s website lists basic tips for staying well in extreme heat, including drinking plenty of water and avoiding drinking large amounts of caffeinated and/or sugary fluids.
