PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation is set to replace roundabouts in north Phoenix this weekend as part of an ongoing $50 million construction project.

The department will remove the roundabouts at Happy Valley Road and Interstate 17 in preparation for installation of the state’s first full diverging diamond interchange.

The removal of the roundabouts will let crews complete on- and off-ramps that connect to the diverging diamond interchange at Happy Valley Road.

All I-17 ramps at Happy Valley Road will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday as a result. Happy Valley Road at I-17 will also be closed during that time.

The new diverging diamond design will feature intersections that allow traffic to cross and use the left side of the Happy Valley Road bridge over I-17.

Also, the design is supposed to allow for improved traffic flow by limiting traffic signal changes and allowing drivers to make direct left turns to enter freeway on-ramps without crossing in front of opposing traffic.

The construction is part of a three-year project in north Phoenix that is expected to be completed by the fall.
