Governor, Phoenix mayor push for gold star Travel IDs

PHOENIX — The countdown is on for Americans to get new Travel IDs to get through airport security.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey got his two years ago. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego does not have one yet.

“And I also want you to know that the mayor has until Oct. 1, 2020, so she’s way ahead of schedule,” Ducey told reporters.

He addressed them with Gallego at the launch of the “Don’t Get Grounded” campaign at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport on Thursday.

In 13 months, the feds will require gold stars on driver licenses to get through their checkpoints and buildings.

“I have been traveling with my passport,” said Gallego, describing the alternative to having a gold star.

She has used it to get into meetings in federal buildings.

Getting gold stars requires new driver licenses and state IDs, even if they haven’t expired.
