Sony and Disney are in the process of taking home theaters to a new level by allowing people to stream movies from home shortly after their release date.
According to the Huffington Post, the two companies tested their idea in South Korea in hopes of lowering piracy and creating an opportunity to reach more viewers than a normal theatrical release would allow.
However, the chances of this catching on in the U.S. are not likely. Major theater chains such as Regal and AMC already refuse to show films that do not have at least a 90-day time period between theatrical release date and home release. The fear is that if movies are offered at home people will have no desire to go to the theater.
