There was so much potential for catastrophe or even death when two different firebugs set a couple of popular Phoenix spots ablaze.

The first started behind a Goodwill at 7th Street and Thunderbird Road on Wednesday, July 19, 2019, at about 4:14 a.m.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Jamie Rothschild says cameras caught the guy who was wearing a white T-shirt, dark shorts and a blue, white and black backpack.

“He looks like he has a crowbar and he’s trying to burglarize a large storage container,” says Sgt. Rothschild. “After almost 30 minutes of trying to break in, you see him go around the back of the container and shortly thereafter, the container is on fire.”

It spread to the building causing structural damage.

“Our hope is that somebody saw him in the area, perhaps with the crowbar. Maybe they thought it looked out of place, and hopefully they’re willing to contact Silent Witness with that information,” says Sgt. Rothschild.

Our next victim is Babbo Italian Eatery at 16th Street and Glendale Avenue on Thursday, April 25, 2019, at 1 a.m.

Sgt. Rothschild says, “The suspect was entering the fenced rear patio of the area and then a short time later fire is seen coming from that area.  That fire caused significant damage to that restaurant.”

Because of the early morning hours, no one was hurt in either fire, but that doesn’t make these arsons any less dangerous.  Police don’t know the motives of these suspects but they do know they caused a lot of damage.
