PHOENIX — Four Arizona students correctly spelled their words during Wednesday’s third round of 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

A preliminary spelling test taken earlier in the week will determine which competitors who survive the third round will make the cut for the final round, which is limited to a maximum of 50 spellers.

The third round was scheduled to run until 2 p.m. Arizona time.

Here are the surviving Arizonans and their third-round words:

  • Scottsdale’s Marcus Giorza: angularity.
  • Window Rock’s Kelly Haven: calzone.
  • Scottsdale’s Max Greenspan: misdemeanant.
  • Glendale’s Iscent George: blight.

Three other Arizonans went out Wednesday:

  • Queen Creek’s Isabella Padilla: Zendo (incorrectly spelled xendo).
  • Chandler’s Daniel Wu: dyspeptic (incorrectly spelled dispeptic).
  • Goodyear’s Lindsay Davis: solecism (incorrectly spelled solisism).

Eight Arizona students qualified for the tournament in National Harbor, Maryland, just outside Washington D.C. The field started with 519 students from U.S. states and territories.

Peoria’s Annabelle Tran went out Tuesday after misspelling tracheostomy.

The finals will be televised in two parts Thursday, with one segment from 7 to 11 a.m. Arizona time on ESPN2 and the completion on ESPN from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The champion will win $40,000 in cash and other prizes.
