Eight Arizona students competing in 2018 National Spelling Bee
The students will compete against more than 500 others in an attempt to be just the second Arizonan to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

PHOENIX — Eight Arizona students were competing in the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee this week.
There are 519 spellers coming from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Department of Defense schools in Europe and eight other countries.
The 91st edition of the competition takes place Tuesday through Thursday in National Harbor, Maryland, just outside Washington D.C.
The students from Arizona are:
- Lindsay Davis, Estrella Mountain Elementary School
- Iscent George, Legacy Traditional School – Glendale
- Marcus Giorza, Arizona Educational Foundation
- Max Greenspan, Cocopah Middle School
- Kelly Haven, Navajo Times Publishing Company
- Isabella Padilla, EDUPRIZE Schools – Queen Creek
- Annabelle Tran, Frontier Elementary School
- Daniel Wu, Arizona College Preparatory School – Erie
The champion will win $40,000 in cash and other prizes.
Tuesday’s round will take place from 6:15 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. and can be viewed on ESPN3. On Wednesday, the round will take place from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. on ESPN3.
The finals will take place Thursday.
The first part of the finals will be on ESPN2 from 7 to 11 a.m. Part two will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on ESPN.
