PHOENIX — A suspect was in critical condition after being shot by an off-duty officer outside of a Hacienda HealthCare facility in Phoenix on Monday.
Sgt. Armando Carbajal said a Florence police officer working security came across the man pointing a gun at a health care worker outside the facility near 16th Street and South Mountain Avenue around 5:30 a.m.
The suspect attempted to flee while shooting back toward the woman. The officer responded by firing his weapon at the suspect until until the man stopped shooting.
The 58-year-old man, who hasn’t been identified, was expected to survive.
Hacienda HealthCare said in a statement that the suspect was a former spouse of the 56-year-old victim, but Carbajal could not confirm their relationship. The company also said it would turn security footage to investigators.
The Hacienda statement also noted that buildings were secured and protected by armed off-duty police officers. There is no threat to the public, Carbajal said.
The Florence Police Department said in a statement the officer was working off-duty security at the time of the shooting. He was uniformed and carrying his department-issued weapon.
The officer, who has worked for the department since 2011, was placed on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
A nurse at the troubled site was arrested in January for allegedly sexually assaulting an incapacitated patient who later gave birth. Carbajal said there is no information to link the shooting to the assault.
The Phoenix Police Department is investigating the shooting.
It is the 10th officer-involved shooting in the Phoenix area so far in 2019.
