PHOENIX — Mesa is welcoming a new wholesale data center developer, EdgeCore, as construction on a new 180,000-square-foot building broke ground on Thursday.
The ground-breaking effort is just one step toward building a campus that will have seven buildings totaling more than 1.25 million square feet upon completion.
Located in the Elliot Road Technology Corridor near Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, EdgeCore selected the site to be its first North American Data Center campus. The data center will have the capacity to support 225 megawatts of utility power.
EdgeCore is an internet real estate company specializing in cloud access, data networking solutions as well as direct fiber connectivity solutions. Its data center is expected to be functional and running by Dec. 2018.
“We’re thrilled that EdgeCore has selected Mesa as the site for its first North American Data Center campus,” said Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey via a release from the city of Mesa.
The Elliot Road Technology Corridor was a project put in place by the Mesa City Council in 2014 and has allowed for a power system overhaul designed to rival Silicon Valley tech systems and attract technology heavyweights to the East Valley.
“Mesa in general has always been a target market for us,” said EdgeCore Vice President Jay DiMaggio. “Without that infrastructure, data centers can’t exist.”
The company is investing more than $150 million on its first data center and with additional customer investment and completion of the entire campus, the total combined investment is expected to exceed $2 billion.
“Mesa is one of the only places in the state that has the infrastructure in place that will support data centers and large users of electricity,” said Mesa City Councilman Kevin Thompson.
