PHOENIX — A closed medical center has another chance to serve its Phoenix community. Maricopa Integrated Health System said Maryvale hospital will reopen early next year.

The Maricopa County Special Health Care District announced Wednesday it would buy the campus that was shut down in December by Abrazo Community Health Network for around $7 million. Plans were to spend about $52 million in renovations, upgrades and equipment.

“We are very happy with the positive collaboration with Abrazo Community Health to ensure that the Maryvale community continues to have access to top quality health care,” Integrated Health System CEO Steve Purves said in a statement release to media.

The hospital near 51st and Campbell avenues will focus on behavioral health and feature 203 beds as well as an emergency room.

“When Maryvale hospital closed, the West Valley was very concerned, particularly for emergency care,” Health Care District Board Director Mary Rose Wilcox said in the press release.

At the time the closure was made public, Abrazo network official Frank Molinaro said, “This was a difficult decision.”

The new owners said refurbishing the facility was “a more efficient way to utilize the funding under Proposition 480,” than starting from scratch.

The health care district board of directors voted unanimously in favor of the acquisition.
