PHOENIX — A Phoenix-area city ranked among the best in the nation for women employed in the technology industry.
According to a recent study from SmartAsset, Chandler was the thirteenth-best city in the nation for women in tech jobs.
AJ Smith, the company’s vice president of financial education, told KTAR News 92.3 FM that Chandler moved up in this year’s study because it scored higher than average in several metrics.
Those metrics were gender pay gap, income after housing costs and tech jobs filled by women.
Smith said Chandler scored the best in the tech jobs filled by women — with women making up 29.2 percent of the tech jobs, the ninth-best rate in the study. Chandler has 4,600 tech jobs and women account for 1,900 of them.
The study also found that women in tech jobs in Chandler make 85 percent of what men make in those same jobs, which was slightly higher than the average of 84.
Women in the technology industry also take home some more money in Chandler compared to other cities. After housing costs, women take home $53,662, a metric that was only $46 higher than the average.
However, the number of tech jobs in Chandler may remain relatively static: There was only a 6 percent growth of tech jobs from 2013 to 2016. That was the one metric where Chandler scored below average, Smith said.
Smith said the study was conducted using data from the U.S. Census Bureau and aimed to get people thinking and talking about their financial goals.
The top five cities in the nation for women in the technology industry included Washington, D.C., Kansas City, Missouri; Baltimore, Philadelphia and Albuquerque.
