Gilbert Town Council to vote on payment to keep GoDaddy office

PHOENIX — Web host giant GoDaddy was expected to keep a customer-service center in Gilbert pending a town council vote to authorize a retention payment of over $800,000.

The vote was listed on Thursday’s agenda. The council was scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m.

The development agreement was to last 10 years, with the Scottsdale-based company known for its quirky TV commercials receiving $86,000 each year, according to KJZZ.

The money was coming from an economic development reserve fund.

The agreement called for “adoption of a Resolution approving a Development Agreement with GoDaddy.com, LLC for the purpose expanding GoDaddy operations in Gilbert.”

Two stipulations of the payment were that GoDaddy kept a certain number of employees at all times and finish improvements to the site near Guadalupe Road and Arizona Avenue. The two years of renovations were slated to cost about $15 million.

One of the company’s remodeled offices in Iowa has a slide between floors, free beer and added 12,00 square feet.

“If you make your employees happy, you make your customers happy. If you make your customers happy, your investors are going to be happy,” CEO Blake Irving told media at a party last week for the unveiling.

The publicly-traded company has over 6,000 employees around the world.

Bob Parsons’ company opened for business in 1997 and went public in 2015.

The internet registrar also has customer care sites in Tempe and Scottsdale.
