PHOENIX — A kitten got a new lease on life Wednesday after being fished out from under a Phoenix street.
It took three days for the city of Phoenix and Arizona Humane Society Emergency Animal Medical Technician Kelley Mallon to pluck the lucky feline from an uncovered manhole near 35th Avenue and Greenway Parkway.
Food was lowered down to the kitten — who has been dubbed Tera — while rescuers figured out a way to pull her out of the sewer. They kept an eye on her using a snake camera.
Tera was the first animal Mallon had rescued from a drain.
After she was rescued, Tera was taken to the Humane Society’s Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital. She was in good condition, but needed a bath.
The 5-week-old kitten will stay with Mallon for several weeks so she can gain weight before being put up for adoption in about three weeks.
People interested in adopting Tera should call the Humane Society at 602-997-7585. They will be placed on a list of interested adopters.
The Humane Society said adopters who miss out on Tera can consider adopting another cat or possibly become a foster home for animals with nowhere to go.
The Humane Society said it wanted to thank the city of Phoenix for its cooperation in the kitten rescue.
