Report: Texas principal fired after banning Spanish

A Texas principal was in some “caliente” water after she reportedly ordered students to stop speaking Spanish.

According to the Huffington Post, Amy Lacey, the head of Hempstead Middle School, was placed on administrative leave in December after using the school’s public address system to forbid students from speaking Spanish.

“When you start banning aspects of ethnicity or cultural identity, it sends the message that the child is not wanted,” Augstin Pinedo, director of the League of United Latin American Citizens Region 18 told the Houston Chronicle. “‘We don’t want your color. We don’t want your kind.’ They tend to drop out early.”

The school’s student body is 55 percent Hispanic. Parents were divided on the issue, with some saying that first-language Spanish-speakers would have more trouble learning and others saying Spanish-speakers could be mocking other children without fear of punishment.
