Phoenix officials: Take precautions when lighting off fireworks this holiday season

PHOENIX — If fireworks are going to be part of any celebrations this holiday season, officials with the Phoenix Fire Department said there are several precautions to keep in mind.

Phoenix Fire Department Captain Aaron Ernsberger said there are only a handful of fireworks that are legal to fire off in Phoenix, including cylindrical and cone fountains, illuminating torches, wheels, ground spinners, flitter sparklers and ground sparkling devices.

Ernsberger said residents can light off fireworks anytime between Dec. 24 and Jan. 3, but could face a $1,000 fine if lit up before or after those dates.

Ernsberger said residents have to be over the age of 16 to legally purchase fireworks, but that does not mean anyone should have free reign with them once they are purchased.

“Never allow children to play with or ignite the fireworks, period,” Ernsberger said.  “(And) don’t try to relight or pick up a firework that didn’t light.”

Ernsberger also recommended to stay a safe distance away from any lit firework and to take the time needed when lighting them off.

“Instead of lighting the whole box off at once, light them off one at a time, then get back and enjoy it,” he said. “Also, keep a little bit of water handy.  Keep a bucket of water or a hose good to go.”
