Hot buys in the first months of the year

PHOENIX — They say there’s a time for everything. When it comes to saving and the best time to score some good buys, timing could be everything.

Just because you see an advertisement for the “lowest prices of the season,” that doesn’t mean there isn’t another time of year that’s an even better period for savings.

January

· You can still find leftover holiday decorations at some stores and online. Some are marked up to 90% off! A perfect time to stock up or add some items to your holiday stash.

· Winter clothing prices take a nose dive this month. Most of the country has already gone through cold months and prices are beginning to drop. Perfect for us in Ariz. who can score big as the chill kicks in.

· Large electronics like televisions start showing up at cheaper prices. Even into February, retailers are trying to get rid of extra inventory from 2013 to make room for newer models.

· For over 30 years, January has been known as white sale time. That means bedding, linen towels and pillows will be at super low prices.

February

· Many retailers introduce new furniture models this month, meaning last year’s inventory has got to go. You might find some great bundling deals for complete furniture sets and sales people might be more lenient to negotiate prices down just to get rid of their stuff.

· Outdoor gear: as winter winds down and spring promises new warmer outdoor activities, you can find good deals on ski wear, snowboarding and pretty much anything snow-related.

· President’s Day bargains can bring big deals on cars and appliances.

· Apparently February is the heart of the winter boat show season, so you might be able to find a boat at a reasonable price.

March

· If you’re looking for small electronics, this is the month to buy. Cell phones, smartphones and digital cameras especially.

· I’m not sure why you would need to buy chocolate after Valentine’s Day, but you would probably save a lot by buying it a month later. Stores will mark things way down to get rid of them.

· Do you have a yearly St. Patrick’s Day party? Stock up on the green stuff right after the holiday and get it super cheap.

Grocery stores also perform on sales cycles. The key is buying what’s in season. Fresh fruits and veggies will be cheaper if you get what’s growing now instead of what’s scarce.

And don’t forget the frozen stuff! March is national frozen month, it’s your chance to stock up the freezer after you score some good deals with great frozen food coupons coming out soon.
