Report: 10 shootings on Arizona freeways confirmed

Arizona Department of Public Safety officers are currently investigating 10 shootings that took place on Arizona highways since late August.

PHOENIX — Arizona Department of Public Safety officers are currently investigating 10 shootings that took place on Arizona highways since late August, according to a recent press release.

The shootings, which began on Aug. 29 and have continued through Wednesday, have mostly occurred on the Interstate 10, although two have been confirmed on State Route 51.

A Phoenix police officer’s personal car was hit early Tuesday morning after his side window shattered while he was heading eastbound on the I-10 near 35th Avenue.

DPS officers questioned a man dressed in black tactical gear on Wednesday, after authorities contacted him near I-10 and 43rd Avenue.

Police are offering a $20,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of a person who may have opened fire on at least 11 cars traveling on I-10.

DPS Director Col. Frank Milstead called the shootings an “act of cowardliness,” saying “people’s lives are at risk.”

“Right now there is a real and continuing threat to Arizona motorists,” he said. “This is a paramount priority for the Arizona Department of Public Safety and our law enforcement partners.”

One minor injury has been reported from the shootings so far.
