PHOENIX — A man has been sentenced to prison for assaulting a Phoenix police officer last year, authorities said Wednesday.
Rudy Gomez, 31, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to three counts of aggravated assault, according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
In April 2023, a woman flagged down Phoenix police officer George Manciu near Central Avenue and Thomas Road. The woman, who was Gomez’s girlfriend, had been involved in a domestic dispute with Gomez, who shattered her vehicle’s window while their three children were inside.
As the officer tried to de-escalate the situation, Gomez began beating him and rendering him unconscious.
Gomez continued to punch and kick the officer as he was unconscious, inflicting serious injuries such as head lacerations, a fractured orbital socket and a broken nasal bone.
Gomez fled the scene but was captured by responding officers.
“It is hard to come up with words that adequately describe the savage, cruel beating of this officer and the sheer inhumanity of the attack,” Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said. “We must support the people who protect us. One way we do that is to put defendants like this one in prison for as long as the law will allow.”
