Big, bright and shining all night: Valley families compete on TV holiday displays show

PHOENIX – Two Valley families are lighting up their neighborhoods and TV screens all around the country on “The Great Christmas Light Fight.”
Brothers Kyle and Sammy Pratt of Scottsdale won Monday’s season-opening episode on ABC with their enormous wood gingerbread house of lights.
A trophy, pride and, perhaps most importantly, a $50,000 grand prize, are at stake. Sweet!
The Scottsdale display includes the 100-foot gingerbread house, candy canes, a motorized ride, fire, a bubble machine and of course, millions of lights that cover the whole of the front yard.
Areas in the yard bear such names as Marshmallow Way, Lollipop Lane and Peppermint Place.
“If you have a sweet tooth, there’s no way you cannot love this,” Kyle Pratt said during the episode.
The sons of famed Valley radio personality Dave Pratt turned their love of decorating the family home for the holidays into a business that specializes in outsized Christmas productions. Their Christmas & Holiday Spectacular is up and sparkling at Bell Bank Park in Mesa.
Next Monday’s episode features the Mesa husband-and-wife team of Shelley and Michael Pelky, ABC 15 reported last week.
The home at 1335 N. Papillon Circle is on glow duty from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., according to the station.
Each two-hour episode features four families who hope their displays are better than everyone else’s. Filing took place last holiday season.
Judges Carter Oosterhouse and Taniya Nayak are back this year. The show veterans have been grinning at holiday displays since Season 3.
Arizona holiday decorators are getting used to being on the show.
Last year, four families made the finals – two from the Valley and two from Tucson. Before that, families from Gilbert, Glendale and Mesa were among those who earned spots in the competition.
The show airs Mondays on ABC at 7 p.m.
