PHOENIX — A man suspected of burglarizing a Chandler home died on Wednesday following a shooting incident with police, authorities said.

The incident happened near Gilbert and Pecos roads around noon.

Video surveillance footage alerted a homeowner of activity in the home while they were away, prompting the homeowner to call police, the Chandler Police Department told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

When police arrived at the home, they heard noises coming from the garage, which opened shortly after with the suspect inside.

Police said the suspect ran back into the home and exited the back of the home armed with a rifle-type weapon.

The shooting happened after the suspect allegedly refused commands to drop the weapon.

Two officers were involved in the shooting and neither were injured, police said.

The suspect was later identified as 30-year-old Cody Allan Smestad.

The incident remains under investigation.

No additional information was available.
