PHOENIX — Phoenix City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to approve the Vision Zero Road Safety Action Plan, the city said in a press release.
This will include the allocation of $10 million in annual funding for its implementation.
The goal is to reduce the number of traffic fatalities and serious injuries in Phoenix to zero by 2050.
The Vision Zero Road Safety Action Plan uses a data-driven, decision-making process to identify transportation safety improvements using 41 different strategies and 31 different performance measures.
These benchmarks include a 25% reduction in traffic deaths by 2027 and a 65% reduction by 2035, according to the release.
“My commitment to the people of Phoenix is to make our roadways safer, whether you’re on foot, on a bike, or in a car,” Mayor Kate Gallego said in the release.
“The action plan approved today places the city in a much better position to access federal dollars that will amplify our investment, making it possible to bring new safety infrastructure to even more of our neighborhoods.”
The Plan also included a detailed five-year crash analysis from 2016-20 as well as a two-phase public engagement that included over 5,000 comments from residents about roadway safety.
