PHOENIX — The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors added $3.65 million to its HVAC repair and replacement fund on Thursday geared toward helping low-income residents with their air-conditioning systems.

The funding, which was allocated from the America Rescue Plan Act, aims to assist eligible families with updates made to enhance to home’s energy efficiency, safety and comfort level, according to a press release.

With the additional funding, the total amount for repairs was raised to $8.65 million, following a previous allocation of $5 million.

More than 500 households are projected to be supported with the additional funding.

“Working air conditioners are not just a nice-to-have; they’re a have-to-have for individuals and families during the hottest months of the year,” District 3 Chairman Bill Gates said in the release.

“Unfortunately, HVAC systems don’t last forever and the fixes aren’t cheap. This program helps families cover this expected cost, which is some cases may save lives.”

Since the system’s inception, nearly 300 projects have been completed, with nearly half requiring HVAC replacements.

The second largest repair service was applied to households with plumbing emergencies, followed by roof replacement and repairs and ones with various safety and health emergencies.
