PHOENIX — Phoenix police are looking for a suspect who killed a mother in a drive-by shooting on Wednesday night, authorities said.
Police responded to the incident near Seventh Avenue and Pima Road around 8 p.m. and found 32-year-old Martha Adrianna Alejo with a gunshot wound to the chest, the Phoenix Police Department said in a press release.
Witnesses told police Alejo was in line waiting for food with her pre-teen son when a car stopped in front of the business and began firing shots, authorities said.
The suspect then took off southbound on 7th Avenue and remains on the loose, authorities said.
Detectives do not believe Alejo was the intended target of the attack, authorities said.
“We know that violent crime in our city has been on the rise,” Cmdr. Warren Brewer, head of the Phoenix Police Department’s Violent Crimes Bureau, said in the release.
“No one should have to worry about being shot as they stand in line for food. And no child should have to see their mother gunned down for no reason.”
Investigators from several units are working on the case, authorities said.
Police said several others were also in the direct line of fire but nobody else was injured.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Phoenix Police Department at (602) 262-6151 or Silent Witness at (480) WITNESS to remain anonymous.
