PHOENIX — It turns out hosting a Super Bowl is a profitable business.
Very, very profitable.
A study from Arizona State University said Super Bowl XLIX in Glendale and game-related events pumped $719.4 million into the state.
“This is tremendous news for our economy and a strong testament to the exceptional work of everyone involved,” Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey said in a release.
The 2014 Super Bowl is the most profitable ever. The last time Arizona hosted the game, it made more than $500 million.
More than 120,000 people came to the Phoenix area for the game and more than one million visited Super Bowl Central in downtown Phoenix. Nearly 400,000 rode during the study period from Jan. 25 to Feb. 1.
The light rail set a ridership record the day before the big game, when 126,000 people jumped on board. It doubled the old record.
The study focused on out-of-state visitors and organization spending. Resident and local business spending was not included in the study.
