PHOENIX – A Mesa father was arrested Sunday after allegedly admitting to fatally shooting his 19-year-old son at the family’s home, authorities said.
Adam Williams, 19, apparently was lying in his own bed when Jeffrey Williams, 61, allegedly shot him, according to a Mesa Police Department press release and court documents.
Jeffrey Williams called 911 and said he’d shot the teenager at their residence near Baseline Road and Val Vista Drive around 12:30 p.m., according to police.
Police found Adam Williams in his own bed with multiple gunshot wounds to the head. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
After being advised of his rights, Jeffrey Williams told police neither he nor his son said anything before the shooting and he wasn’t sure whether Adam’s eyes were open at the time, according to court documents. The father turned himself in without incident, police said.
The suspect was booked into jail on one count of first-degree murder.
A witness inside the house heard the gunfire and said Adam Williams may have gone into his room to sleep, according to the probable cause statement. The witness didn’t know why the suspect would shoot his own son.
Medical staff said it appeared the victim had been shot at close range in the head and face, according to the probable cause statement.
