PHOENIX — The Scottsdale City Council has approved more than $250,000 in funding for nonprofit agencies that provide programs and services for residents in need.
The funding is in addition to $1.3 million approved by the council in May for a variety of community programs, including safe and affordable housing for lower-income households.
Approximately $160,000 allocated from Scottsdale Cares will go to 14 programs that provide meals, emergency rent and mortgage, including Best Buddies, Valley of the Sun YMCA, Community Bridges and Phoenix Rescue Mission, according to a press release.
Scottsdale Cares is a donation program in which residents have the option to add $1 or more to their monthly city utility bill.
The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community contributed a $100,000 grant, which will go toward seven agencies with food and shelter services, including A New Leaf, Catholic Charities and Chrysalis Shelter for Victims of Domestic Violence.
Funds also help organizations such as the Phoenix Rescue Mission through the Scottsdale Works Brick by Brick program.
The project provides jobs and resources to the homeless by paying participants to produce earthen bricks that can be used to construct city projects or housing.
