PHOENIX — Two firefighters died Saturday after an aircraft they were in to respond to a wildfire crashed in Mohave County, authorities said.
The Arizona Bureau of Land Management said in a press release the aircraft was helping perform aerial reconnaissance and command and control over the Cedar Basin Fire burning near Wikieup, a tiny community of about 100.
Pilot Matthew Miller, 48, and Air Tactical Group Supervisor Jeff Piechura, 62, did not survive the crash that occurred around noon, authorities said.
Miller was a fire pilot with Falcon Executive Aviation, Inc, contracted by the U.S. Forest Service, while Piechura was an employee with the Coronado National Forest.
“Our hearts and most sincere condolences are with the families, friends and colleagues of both individuals lost in this tragic accident,” Raymond Suazo, BLM Arizona State director, said in the release.
“This reminds us of the inherent risks involved in wildland firefighting and the gratitude we owe to the courageous and committed men and women who serve willingly to protect lives, communities and natural resources.”
The lightning-caused Cedar Basin Fire has burned 300 acres (121 hectares). The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
